What is Transpersonal Therapy?

Have you ever felt there is something within you that is trying to speak, but you’re not quite sure how to listen to it?

Maybe you understand why you feel or behave a certain way. You’ve thought about it, talked about it, perhaps even worked through it, but somehow you know there is something more, something deep within ourselves.

Transpersonal therapy looks beyond our thoughts and behaviours alone. It explores the whole person, our emotions, experiences, patterns, body, intuition and, where it feels relevant, our deeper sense of meaning or spirituality.

For me, this has always felt like a very natural way of working. I believe there is a part of us that is always trying to communicate with us, but with all the noise of our thoughts, fears, conditioning, and everyday life, we can lose connection with it.

Sometimes the work is simply beginning to understand how to listen again.

What Does “Transpersonal” Actually Mean?

The word transpersonal simply means going beyond the individual self, looking beyond just our thoughts, behaviours and the story we tell ourselves about who we are.

Traditional talking therapy can help us understand our experiences, our patterns and behaviours, our past and our inner child, and this can be incredibly valuable. Transpersonal therapy doesn't replace any of that; it simply allows us to go beyond.

It asks us to pay attention to the whole of our experience, what we think, what we feel, what we notice in our body, what we intuitively sense, and sometimes the bigger questions that arise around meaning, purpose, and who we really are.

Because the more we begin to understand who we are, the more we can begin to trust ourselves. And when we trust ourselves, there can be a sense of feeling safer within ourselves too, and less need to constantly look outside ourselves for the answers.

You don't have to be spiritual or have any particular beliefs. For me, it's much more about being curious about all the parts of ourselves we don't always know how to put into words.

Beyond Talking — Learning to Listen

Sometimes we can understand something perfectly in our minds and still feel it in our bodies. We know where the anxiety comes from. We recognise the pattern. We understand what happened in the past. And yet, something still feels stuck.

This is where I feel we need to begin listening differently.

Our bodies are constantly communicating with us, through tension, emotion, sensations, and sometimes simply a feeling that something isn't quite right. Our intuition can communicate in a similar way. It isn't always a clear voice telling us what to do; often it's much quieter than that.

Transpersonal therapy gives us space to notice these things rather than immediately trying to analyse or change them. Sometimes that might be through talking, sometimes through simply sitting with a feeling, and sometimes through somatic breath, movement, or bringing our awareness into the body.

For me, the important part is learning to become curious about what is there. Because when we stop trying to push feelings away and begin listening to them, we can start to understand what they may be trying to tell us.

Finding Your Way Back to Yourself

For me, transpersonal therapy is ultimately about reconnecting with yourself.

Understanding your past and your patterns matters, but so does learning to listen to what is happening within you now.

The more we begin to know ourselves, the more we can trust ourselves — and perhaps that is where real change begins.

My Approach to Transpersonal Therapy

My approach brings together counselling, transpersonal therapy, intuition and awareness of the body. Every session is different because every person is different, and we work with whatever feels most present for you at the time.

There is no expectation to be spiritual or to believe in anything in particular. It is simply a space to explore yourself more deeply, reconnect with your own inner guidance, and begin to trust yourself again.
